Virtual Exhibit
While Louisiana is still in a socially distant mode, and as we are seeking ways to feel “normal” now may be just the perfect time to visit the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance Museum, Art Gallery and Visitors Center. Gary Meyer’s photograph sets the tone and the theme for our 2020 Swamp Spirits exhibit. His image of a Great Egret flying over blooming waterlilies with a hazy swamp setting in the background was selected by the Gueydan Museum Board as the 2020 Swamp Spirits image.
Youngsville artist, Tina Trahan presents her refined techniques that showcases a well developed textual element enhancing the scene with resin glazing techniques that result in a mirror smooth finish. Simone Little, of Morse Louisiana, chose to minimalize the image and emphasize the importance of ecology with the use of ecological bubbles in the places where lilies and blooms should be. A reminder that good ecology practices may result in the Artist and teacher, Laura LaBorde, of Broussard, brings in the soft coral pink shades and soft blue hues of the serene setting . Laura offers the viewer a calm reflection from observing the tranquility she paints. Gueydan artist and instructor, Theresa DePerrodil Trahan , created the atmosphere of a late afternoon visit in the swamp, perhaps just after a summer rain and at the moment a great egret is taking flight. Theresa captures the realty of a perfect moment in the swamp. Artist, Tony Mayard, of Lafayette , added a frog to his image because he feels that from a frog’s view point everything is bigger and brighter in many shades of green. Growing up in Vermilion Parish Tony developed a fondness for the marshlands and swamps as well as respect for all of the flora and fauna blessing our lands and tables.
Altogether these artist have created a visual retreat from the worries of Covid 19. The Museum/Visitors’ Center in the heart of Abbeville may just be a place to pause, just the place to remember who we are and the lushness of both our land and our culture. While South Louisiana’s delicious food feeds your body let the beauty of our art and history feed your soul.
